Sublime String Quartets from Bohemia

With the Amici String Quartet: Suzanne Martens (first violin), David Bester (second violin), Karin Gaertner (viola) and Peter Martens (cello)

The Amici String Quartet from Cape Town is widely regarded as one of the country’s finest chamber music ensembles. Join them on a journey through works from some of the finest string quartet composers in history. Mozart composed his first string quartet at the age of 14, in the small town of Lodi in Italy – hence the work’s nickname, Lodi Quartet. Other famous string quartet composers from Vienna include Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert. These composers are represented by the first movement of the Rosamunde Quartet by Schubert. His affinity for composing for the human voice is evident in this work of sublime lyrical beauty. In the Czech Republic one finds the prolific quartet composer Dvořák. American Quartet is his best-known string quartet, combining elements of folk music from his native Bohemia with those of his new world, the United States of America.
