Aquila Duo: Echoes of Arcadia​

Since antiquity, Western culture has been preoccupied with the mythical realm of Arcadia, home to the god Pan and his court. Symbolising pastoral simplicity and communion with the natural world, Arcadian ideals have echoed through the centuries. This programme traces how such notions inspired five 19th- and 20th-century composers, focussing on two inhabitants of the mythological kingdom: Pan, the satyr god of the wild, and Undine, a water nymph. Encompassing a wide range of musical styles, this programme aims to bring these mythological figures to life with Albert Roussel’s Joueurs de flûte, Op. 27, Claude Debussy’s Syrinx, Matthijs van Dijk’s Van Hunks, Carl Reinecke’s Sonata Undine, Op. 167, and Gabriel Fauré’s Fantaisie. The recital is followed by a free 45-minute music discussion with artists upstairs in the Banqueting Hall.

Die Westerse kultuur is sedert antieke tye bemoei met die mitiese ryk van Arkadië, die tuiste van die god Pan en sy hof. Arkadiese ideale weerklink reeds deur die eeue heen, met simboliek van pastorale eenvoud en kommunikasie met die natuurlike wêreld. Hierdie program verken die wyse waarop dié konsepte vyf komponiste uit die 19de en 20ste eeue geïnspireer het om op twee inwoners van die mitologiese koninkryk te fokus: Pan, die satiriese god van die natuur en Undine, ’n waternimf. Deur die gebruik van ’n wye reeks musiekstyle, poog Echoes of Arcadia om lewe aan hierdie mitologiese figure te gee. Op die program is Albert Roussel se “Joueurs de flûte”, op. 27, Claude Debussy se “Syrinx”, Matthijs van Dijk se “Van Hunks”, Carl Reinecke se “Sonate Undine”, Op. 167 en Gabriel Fauré se “Fantaisie” in. Die uitvoering word gevolg deur ’n gratis 45-minute musiekgesprek met kunstenaars bo in die Banketsaal.
