With Peter Martens (cello)

Bach wrote six suites for unaccompanied cello in circa 1720. These remain at the pinnacle of unaccompanied repertoire for the instrument today. Each suite is a collection of five dance inspired movements, preceded by a prelude. The beauty of the instrument is revealed through different characters in each suite, those in major keys portraying optimism, majesty, and complexity, whilst those in minor keys portray contemplation and sadness. Peter Martens is the only South African cellist to have recorded these works in their entirety. The programme on 4 August includes Bach’s Cello Suite No. 3 in C major, BWV 1009 and Cello Suite No. 4 in E-flat major, BWV 1010; 5 August includes Bach’s Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008 and Cello Suite No. 5 in C minor, BWV 1011 and 6 August includes Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G major, BWV 1007 and Cello Suite No. 6 in D major, BWV 1012.
